What do coffee, cigarettes and red wine all have in common? Well apart from all being "bad for you" vices, each one is likely to stain your teeth, something that no woman wants in her life!

I'll be the first to admit that sometimes a girl needs at least one vice in her life, mine is red wine! I love it. I drink at least a glass a night, sometimes more if I get a little carried away.

Now that I'm in my 30s, I'm starting to see the toll this is taking on my teeth. Still, I can't ever see myself stopping drinking red wine completely, so I had to come up with an alternate solution: a simple, yet super-effective DIY remedy for whitening your teeth.

Ever since I started incorporating this into my daily routine I've noticed nothing but positive results, going from what could have become a serious problem, to all round pearly whites day in day out!

Strawberries
A fun fact: A lot of celebrities use strawberries to keep their teeth nice and white.

Here's What You'll Need to Make This Remedy

You're literally only going to need two ingredients, both of which you can pick up from your local supermarket and when compared with some of the whitening products out there, this one ain't going to break your budget!

Mmmm Strawberries x 2

Strawberries contain a lot of malic acid, which helps to increase the production of saliva. Sounds kinda gross, but what this does is help reduce the amount of bacteria that exist on your teeth and gums. It's this bacteria that cause our teeth to decay over time and eventually turn a horrid shade of yellow.

Okay, so once you see what the second ingredient is, you're not going to like me because this ain't one of those remedies you're going to want to eat!

Baking Soda — 1/2 Teaspoon

Most people already know how effective baking soda is as a teeth whitening ingredient. It's essentially going to act as our bleaching agent, penetrating deep into the enamel of your teeth, bleaching any stains left behind from crazy nights out and morning coffee hangovers!

Some people just use baking soda to whiten their teeth, but I've found that by combining it with strawberries, which are used to keep your teeth and gums healthy, it's far more effective over the long haul.

I should also warn you, it may irritate your gums a little so you definitely don't want to apply it for too long at a time!

Making the Remedy

It's so easy to make and should only take about 2 minutes. Just follow these short instructions and you'll be on your way to whiter looking teeth before you can say "cheese":

  • Step 1: Cut your strawberries up into small pieces and place them into a bowl.
  • Step 2: Take a fork and mash them up as best you can so the mix looks nice and even.
  • Step 3: Add your baking soda and keep mashing the mix up until it starts to resemble a paste. The baking soda will most likely froth up a little, which is perfectly normal so don't worry!
  • Step 4: Grab a toothbrush (you might want to use a separate one from your regular toothbrush), dip it into the mix and start brushing for about 2 minutes.
  • Step 5: Wash your mouth out with water and you're done!

Keep This in Mind

I just want to leave you with a couple important points worth mentioning before you gather up all the ingredients and start mixing.

As I mentioned earlier, the baking soda is probably going to cause some gum irritation during and after application, but don't worry, it won't last for long. Just make sure you don't use any more than a half teaspoon and really wash out your mouth afterwards!

Try and apply this DIY teeth whitening remedy once a day (morning or night) and you should start to see results after around 2 weeks of treatment. Now get out there and get your smile on!
