Raspberries
Raspberries are the best natural source of ellagic acid.

Raspberries are bursting with nutrients and flavor, yet they are very low in calories. One of the most interesting compounds in raspberries is ellagic acid, a natural anti-carcinogen, anti-mutagen, and an inhibitor of cancer. In some cases, it has also been able to cause apoptosis (cell death) in cancer cells. Ellagic acid is found in a number of foods, red raspberries being by far the best source of this miraculous substance (1,500 mcg per gram of dry weight fruit extract). Further, the ellagic acid found in red raspberries retains its potency through heating and freezing. So, regardless of whether you eat your raspberries fresh, frozen or heated, you will reap their cancer-fighting benefits.

They are an excellent source of the anti-cancer mineral selenium, with 1 cup providing more than half of the recommended daily intake. Furthermore, shiitake mushrooms are one of the best sources of beta-glucans which, according to some studies conducted on humans, can attack cancerous cells beta-glucans and therefore fight cancer, including stomach cancer. The anti-tumor and anti-cancer activities of beta-glucans have also been proven by numerous animal tests.

#10:  Salmon

Salmon is loaded with omega 3-fatty acids, essential fatty acids that are believed to have a protective effect against stomach cancer and other types of cancer. In addition to omega-3s, salmon — especially wild salmon — delivers astaxanthin, a carotenoid that gives salmon its pink color. Astaxanthin is an antioxidant that has been shown to be particularly effevtive at destroying free radicals. What's more, wild salmon contains only low levels of PCBs, harmful chemicals that are often found in high quantities in farmed salmon. That said, moderation should be the key also when incorporating wild salmon to your diet as a high a consumption of salmon and other fish may predispose you to an excessive exposure mercury, pesticides, and other toxins contained in fish. The FDA recommends eating fish twice a week, but not more often. Further, it is best to limit the consumption of smoked salmon and salt-cured salmon as smoked and salt-cured foods may increase the risk of stomach cancer.

Fish roe
Fish eggs top the list of natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

#11:  Fish Eggs

A little goes a long way when it comes to fish eggs. Fish eggs are one of the best natural sources of DHA and EPA which are types of omega-3 fatty acids. Ounce for ounce, fish eggs contain even more omega-3s than the fattiest fish. A study, which analyzed the roe of fifteen marine animals, found that the roe of lumpsucker, hake, and salmon were the richest in terms of omega-3 fatty acids.

#12:  Kale

Thanks to its broad nutritional profile, kale offers health benefits that extend well beyond basic nutrition. This relatively unknown member of the cabbage family delivers a slew of cancer combating nutrients such as vitamin C and beta-carotene (kale contains ten times the beta-carotene of broccoli). As a result of its high content of antioxidant nutrients, kale is at the top of the list of vegetables with the highest ORAC rating. ORAC, or Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, is a measure of the total antioxidant power of foods. The tender young leaves of kale can be eaten raw, for example as a substitute for iceberg lettuce in salads. This beautiful, green leafy vegetable can also be transformed into a hearty warm dish by sautéing the leaves and mixing them with chopped onions, crushed garlic and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

#13:  Cherries

Cherries are naturally rich in perillyl alcohol (POH), a compound that has been found to be effective at destroying cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. When buying cherries, it is wise to choose organically grown fruit whenever possible as conventionally grown cherries often contain high levels of pesticides and other chemical compounds.

#14:  Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are one of the oldest vegetables known to man. They are also one of the most nutritious vegetables and contain plenty of nutrients that have been shown to help protect against stomach cancer. The pink, orange, and yellow varieties are one of the best food sources of beta-carotene (the more intense the color, the more beta-carotene), but sweet potatoes are also a rich source of vitamin C. What's more, they contain unique root proteins which, according to preliminary studies, may have significant antioxidant properties. In addition, sweet potatoes are typically low in pesticides, even the non-organically grown produce.
