US-Grown Spirulina (Tested for Heavy Metals and Microcystins)

In many industrial parts of China and the rest of Asia, pollution is a major problem, and food grown in these areas may contain shockingly large amounts of heavy metals and other toxins. Even food cultivated using organic farming methods in these areas may contain a lot of heavy metals and chemicals because organic regulations do not generally address environmental sources of pollution such as contaminated irrigation water or air pollution; instead, they focus on restricting the amount of chemicals the farmer can employ.

Consequently, it is not surprising that many health-conscious consumers in the US and UK prefer to buy foods that have been grown in the US or Europe. If you are looking to buy high-quality spirulina seaweed that does not come from China, India, Japan or any other Asian country, we have some good news for you: Nutrex Hawaii grows its spirulina seaweed in Kona, Hawaii, which is one of the sunniest coasts in the US Grown in a biosecure zone that is free of pesticides, herbicides and industrial pollutants, this hiqh-quality spirulina seaweed is also GMO-free, and periodically tested for microcystins and irradiation.

How is Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica Grown?

Nutrex Hawaii has been selling U.S.-grown spirulina since mid-80s when the company set up its spirulina seaweed farm on the pristine Kona coast of Hawaii, which is one of the sunniest coasts in the USA. Nutrex Hawaii's spirulina is cultivated in a biosecure zone that is certified free of pesticides, herbicides and industrial pollutants. Each pond contains 100% potable fresh water from Hawaiian aquifers, combined with a small amount of pure, deep ocean water. The ocean water, which is pumped from 2000 feet below the ocean surface, enriches Nutrex' Spirulina Pacifica with a wide range of minerals and trace elements. In addition, the high amount of sunlight on the Kona Coast ensures that Nutrex' spirulina contains extremely high levels of carotenoids.

Tested for Heavy Metals and Microcystins

Nutrex Hawaii conduct extensive testing to ensure the purity, safety and quality of their seaweed products. According to their website, each lot of spirulina goes through a series of over 15 different tests that check the algae for, among other things, microbes and heavy metals. Their spirulina is also periodically tested for microcystins, and as of the writing of this article (May 2015), has never been found to be contaminated with these harmful compounds. According to a study published in the May 2000 issue of the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, are toxic to the liver and probable tumor promoters. While these toxic compounds are not produced by spirulina itself, they may occur in spirulina powder and tablets as a result of contamination with microcystin-producing blue-green algae such as Microcystis aeruginosa.

Not Affected by Radiation from Fukushima in Japan

One of the reasons why you might be looking for U.S.-grown spirulina is the concern that spirulina from Japan, China or other Asian countries bordering the Pacific Ocean might have been polluted by radiation from the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan. Hawaii, of course, is located much further away from the Fukushima nuclear plant than Japan and most coastal parts of China, but it is still located in the Pacific Ocean, which might raise some questions. But Nutrex assures us there's no need for worry: Fukushima has not affected Nutrex' spirulina to date (as of May 2015), and even though they haven't had any problems with radiation, they do radiation testing in their labs and send samples to an external lab for additional testing. Each test has come back negative for radiation. To ease your worries even further, Nutrex' spirulina is not grown in the Pacific Ocean – it is cultivated in lined ponds that contain primarily fresh water. The small amount of sea water in the ponds is pumped from 2000 feet below the ocean surface and has not seen the surface in over 2000 years, making it some of the purest waters you can find.
