Sprouty Banana Smoothie
2 Servings
As well as containing classic smoothie ingredients such as banana chunks, orange sections, and crushed ice, this invigorating smoothie also features juicy broccoli sprouts. If you can't find broccoli sprouts in the grocery stores in your area, you can also replace them with broccoli microgreens which are very easy to grow at home (for instructions, see How to Grow Broccoli Microgreens).
The basic recipe below uses pineapple juice for a fruity flavor, but if you're planning to treat yourself to a "sprouty" smoothie on several days in a row, you may want to replace the pineapple juice with another liquid on some of those days to keep your taste buds intrigued. Use the Tweak It! section at the bottom of this page for inspiration.
Ingredients
- 1 small organic banana
- 1 orange
- 1/2 cup broccoli sprouts or microgreens
- 1 Tbsp sunflower seeds
- 1/2 cup crushed ice
- 1 1/2 cups additive-free pineapple juice (or 1 1/2 cups of any other juice from the Tweak It! box)
Directions
- Peel the banana and orange, and rinse the broccoli sprouts or microgreens thoroughly under cold running water. Break the peeled banana and orange into a few big pieces to fit in the blender
- Place all the ingredients in a large-capacity blender. Note: If you're using a high-powered blender that can handle ice cubes, you can replace the crushed ice with eight whole ice cubes if you like.
- Blend until smooth and creamy.
- Check the consistency of the smoothie. If it's is too thick for your liking, add a little bit of filtered water, and blend again. Enjoy immediately.
- Tip: Enjoy a slightly different version of this sprouty smoothie every day the rest of the week by each day replacing the kiwis in the basic recipe with one of the other ingredients listed in the Tweak It! box below.
